What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is merely a way to relax the body and the mind using guided imagery and visualization. It’s actually a natural state that you’ve experienced hundreds of thousands of times before. For example, whenever your mind wanders off in a daydream; that’s a hypnotic state. Or when you feel totally relaxed, right before you fall asleep at night; that’s also a hypnotic state.

Is there science behind hypnosis?

Yes, hypnosis is based on scientific principles. There is nothing mysterious about it. Your brain produces different wave patterns for when you’re awake, relaxed, dreaming or in a deep sleep. When you’re relaxed or dreaming, your subconscious is open to learning. All the stuff you’ve experienced or learned in your life is stored in the subconscious, like driving your car, for instance. When you drive, it’s so automatic, you don’t need to think about it. That’s why hypnosis is the ultimate mind/body connection.

How can I benefit from hypnotherapy?

During hypnosis, you’re accessing your subconscious, and since the subconscious is where you learn, it is also the place where you can change what you’ve learned or how you feel. For example, hypnosis can help you improve a skill like your tennis game, change a negative behavior like overeating, reduce pain or stress or fear, increase concentration, productivity or self-esteem.

What happens in a typical session?

After our initial talk, you will sit or lie in a comfortable position with your eyes closed while I guide you through a full body relaxation.  I will ask you to relax deeper by counting from 10-1.  I may also ask you to visualize a place where you feel totally relaxed.  Once you are relaxed, I'll give you positive suggestions and imagery that we have mutually agreed upon prior to the session. After that, I'll count you back to a fully awake state.  During most sessions, I'll play soothing music.  You will have a CD of the session to listen to as often as possible.

Will I be in control of what I do or say during hypnosis?

The best thing about hypnosis is that you’re always in complete control. You have the ability to come out of it anytime you want. There’s nothing anyone could make you do or say that’s not acceptable to you. The hypnotherapist is just a guide who helps you to relax and imagine using visualization and positive suggestions.

What if I can't be hypnotized?

Anyone can relax and imagine, and that’s all you need to do to access your subconscious for learning or changing behavior. You must, of course, be open and willing.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions will vary from a minimum of two to several visits depending upon the behavior modification desired.  Sessions are designed with the client to meet individual needs.  Each client is provided with an audiotape of his or her session to reinforce the desired result.

How does hypnosis differ from meditation?

The brain waves during meditation and hypnosis are the same, however, in meditation, the objective is to completely quiet the mind. In hypnosis, the objective is to provide suggestions to activate change and cause a physiological response.
